Judi Cohen practiced law for twenty-five years and taught law for a decade before founding Warrior One LLC to train lawyers in mindfulness techniques so they can transform the law into a profession that is not only brilliant and powerful, but also wise and compassionate.  She does this through one-to-one Mindfulness-Based Leadership Coaching, as well as through Warrior One’s signature training in Essential Mindfulness for Lawyers (EML). Essential Mindfulness for Lawyers is a set of programs accredited by the California Bar for continuing legal education, that enables lawyers to become more effective, balanced advocates in a rapidly evolving profession, by learning how to understand and employ the legal mind in smarter, saner ways.

EML courses have now been taught at international law firms including Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, LLP, Littler Mendelson, PC, and Goodwin Procter LLP; at bench and bar associations including the Bar Association of San Francisco, the State Bar of Arizona, the Arizona Judicial Council, and the Pennsylvania Women’s Bar Association; in various public courses and conferences; and in educational settings including at the University of San Francisco School of Law (where Judi co-developed and taught ‘Contemplative Lawyering’, a precursor to EML), and in an ongoing EML course at Golden Gate University School of Law.  Judi also teaches EML concepts to students, faculty and staff in the Golden Gate University Mindful Lawyering Group, which meets weekly during the school year, and in Mindfulness for the Bar, a post-graduate course for JDs studying for the bar.

Judi is a frequent speaker, trainer and workshop leader at the intersection of mindfulness and the law.  Some of her upcoming and more recent engagements include Catapult 2013 (opening keynote), the Golden Gate University Leadership Retreat (afternoon retreat leader), the Pennsylvania Women’s Bar Association’s Annual Retreat (keynote), the 2012 Arizona Judicial College, the 2012 Arizona Bar Association’s Annual Convention, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the Colorado Law Leaders Gathering, the annual Retreat for Law Professionals at Spirit Rock Meditation Center (teacher), The Mindful Lawyer Conference, and the International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers.

Judi was awarded the designation of Certified Professional Coactive Coach by The Coaches Training Institute in San Rafael, California in 2009, and is also a member of the International Coaching Federation.  She obtained her JD from Emory University in 1984 and her BS in Communication Studies from Northwestern University in 1981.  She has been practicing mindfulness meditation for over twenty years as a student of James Baraz, creator of the international program Awakening Joy, and more recently as a student of Zoketsu Norman Fischer of Everyday Zen.  Judi also completed the eighteen-month Mindful Yoga Program at Spirit Rock, which included three ten-day silent retreats.  In 1997, she completed the Four Fold Way program with Angeles Arrien, and she has also studied with Phillip Moffitt, Judith Lasater, Mark Coleman, Joanna Macy, Roshi Joan Halifax, and others.  She is a member of the Bay Area Working Group for Lawyers, an offshoot of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society.
